Sustainable soil protection with new Continental CHO SVT harvester tyre

14-11-2011 02:33:21 PM

Following intensive cooperation with a leading combine harvester manufacturer, Mitas has launched the Continental CHO (Cyclic Harvest Operation) SVT tyre.

“To react to the demand for a high performance generation of combine harvesters it was necessary to develop tyres to solve the conflict between compliance in road application and the increasing need for soil protection,” said Hans-Ulrich Klose, head of the Automotive Engineering unit at Mitas. “The challenge is the dramatically increasing tyre load in field application with full grain tanks and a mounted cutter bar. We couldn’t follow the traditional way of using even wider tyres, as this would conflict with allowed vehicle width regulations,” he added.

The new CHO tyre is a solution to this challenge. Compared with a standard tyre, the CHO tyre provides much more load capacity at lower inflation pressure. At the same time, it improves mobility on the road.

The specific features of the 800/70 R 32 CHO provides an advantage of up to 31% reduction in inflation pressure at the same load compared to the standard tyre. This lower inflation pressure causes an up to 24% larger footprint. In addition to less soil compaction, less slippage and reduced fuel consumption, this enlarged footprint also provides better mobility under difficult and wet soil conditions.

As opposed to much wider standard tyres, the 800/70 R 32 CHO tyres mounted on the combine harvester ensure that the total vehicle width is within 3.50 m to fulfil legal requirements. Mitas will start selling the CHO tyres through its subsidiaries in November.
